Might have had something to do with how it was raked. I have never noticed a difference with 4x4 bales. The stubble left in the field by a rotary looks different though. Some of the first rotarys in the area did a horrible job in down first cutting. They seem to have gotten it figured out though.

I am kinda thinking that the rotory will be easier to maintain. No reel or wobble drives. The floor sections are small and bolt in. Knives and turtles will be lots easier to replace than sickles and guards. If you have lots of rocks the gearbox's on the rotary are going to get expensive though. The rotary is also cleaner to operate. The hood keeps the dust down.
