Woodham, Ontario | Seems here almost all of the new machines sold are disc mowers. We have been using NH mowers ince 1997. Currently use a 1441 which has rolls. You can really move with these things. I can cut about 15 acres per hour on average. Cutting 250 acres in a single day is possible. You do need some good HP, right now with a JD 8120 tractor I usually drive 14 MPH in 14th gear, the problem is that 13th gear is about 11 MPH which is too much of a difference. At 14 MPH I pass older tractors that are driving on the road while cutting 15'7" of alfalfa. We pick the stones and gophers mounds are basically non-existant. We have relatively flat land and large fields so we can move fast.
I would rather drive slower but with the huge jump in speed between those gears and our humid climate, time is a significant problem. quality of cut is great though at any speed. In the future I would like to cut wider with more wide swaths, which probably involves a front mounted mower and a pulltype behind and a CVT/IVT tractor.
