| Hey guys. There is a lot of sorghum Sudan grown here in Ne Colorado. I’m kinda curious about it for a base for heifer feed or a maintenance feed for when we run out of pasture in august. Most of it is dryland and dry baled but we hauled a few quarters of dry land for a neighbor that was chopping it. It was chopped pretty dry 40-45%. See the picture with the windrows. Plugged the guys chopper about every round. Iv seen a few feed samples over the years and looks like it’s a 5-7% protein and mid .5s for lactation and maintenance and .3ish on gain. Iv seen RFV around 100 and RFQ 150ish. Keep in mind that’s dryland hay with 7-10 inches of rain annual. Would that stuff make better silage than dry hay? I’m surprised it doesn’t have higher protein. Wondering if chopped triticale would be a better option for heifer feed? Would be nice to chop in May when things are slower. Our rain comes in May-June. Irrigated Hay millet is typically our go to
