Whole wheat bread you buy often has a lot of sugar added to it to make it palatable for most people. If it burns easily in the toaster it has a lot of sugar in it.
Making bread from whole wheat flour alone does not work well without fiddling with the recipe. At home, you can get decent bread when using 50 or 60% whole wheat flour. Whole wheat flour made from hard white wheat makes better bread in my opinion.

On the subject of cereals, there is a vast difference between cereals and the amount of sugar they contain, and how fast they are digested. There is a lot of difference between Captain Crunch and Shredded Wheat or cooked whole grain cereals with no additives. Also, portion size is another big factor.
