Here's the rules for the state of New York (thinking that's where your GF resided), state rules apply for those who die with no will/trust. Hopefully (most likely) your GF estate was less than the Federal estate tax credit limit (under ~$12M), if wasn't estate tax return (form 706) would be due within 9 months of death.
