I had a heifer give birth a little over a year ago. I found it late in the day and moved them to a separate pen. She wanted nothing to do with calf but I left them and hoped for the best. Next morning my wife went to check them. Calf was weak and cow still wanted nothing to do with her calf. Wife took calf home and put in the kitchen for warmth and feeding. It died the next day. That same heifer has had her second calf and been doing a perfect job taking care of it.

I've had 2 of 5 new heifers calve in the last 2 weeks. The problem so far is the calves don't know how to nurse. You can fix stupid sometimes. The first is 2 weeks old today, doing excellent, and almost house trained.

A deal like that we’d get something in the calf—now. Pack thermos’s of hot water, cans of condensed milk—-might take 5 minutes to tube it and move on—
