South Central Iowa | Storytime. Years ago had a first calf heifer not claim her calf. After a week and a half of twice daily tie up in chute nursings she relented and accepted the calf. Kicked the pair out, come fall one of the best calves in the group. Ok, you get another chance. Second calf from her, same deal. Took a week to accept it. You no good so-and-so, you raised a good calf and bred right back, hate to send you to the sale barn as a pair, raise this one and you're going to town come fall. Fall comes, ah heck, maybe she's learned her lesson. Third calf comes, back in the calving pasture, I watched the delivery. She squirted the calf out on the ground, stood up, never even looked over her shoulder at it, just started walking north. Coincidentally north was the direction of the corral and load out, so that's where we headed. Some get it right after a round of neglect, some just weren't meant to be mothers. | |
