Honestly I've read this thread a couple of times
What am I missing? You only have a need for 50-60 calves to keep your system full. Why take on a whole new burden of cow/calf to burden you? Prices of calves are going to drop, assured. No way could I take debit on for building for pairs, equipment to raise forage for pairs.
Find a good honest supplier for calves. Pay them a fair price, keep long term agreement. When I sold holstein steers, I had standing order for everything I could raise. They paid premium price, never a problem. I so love the KISS program.

+1 on Russ's thoughts, if you have a good market for that much freezer beef share a little bit of it with some one to source your calves from, there are plenty of us would love to have a relationship like that year in year out. |
