Subject: RE: In-line ripping in the spring

NW Iowa
What is your normal tillage program? If you normally do not rip deep you might bring up weed seeds with your ripper. I made that mistake a few years ago. I haven't deep tilled for 8 or 10 years, just one field cultivating before corn and no till beans the next year. a few years ago I had a little tiling done in one wet hole and the ground seemed tight so that fall I went in with the V ripper and tore up about four acres. The next year that four acres had terrible weeds in the beans right to the row where I had ripped. I ended up walking that four acres to hand weed. About a month ago, yes, in February in northwest Iowa, my son ripped up manure hauling tracks in about that same area. Corn will be going in there so the broadleaves will be a little easier to handle but the jury is still out on the weed situation AND the moisture situation. Edit: I used a regular ripper that brings up chunks, your results might not be the same as mine with an inline ripper.
