Thumb of Michigan | You're on the right track by soil testing and going from there. Soil test at around the same time each year is one of my goals. If you are removing hay only and not grazing, perhaps you can use a rule of thumb that around 10 units of phos and 50 units of K, are removed per ton. Grasses naturally like N, but there most likely a happy medium of cost/reward that could come into play.
A question might be what is your goal? increasing day matter production per acre? Then some legume might be in order (alfalfa). Is grazing important? Alfalfa might not stand up to grazing pressure. | |
