Central Illinois | The "bluestem" you are referring to is called broomsedge most likely. It is a low quality, perennial grass that invades fields that are low in soil fertility. Usually low in lime and phosphorus but if the field had been hayed quite a bit it will likely have low potash levels as well. Some call it "poverty grass" for good reason. It has no value. Once the fertility begins to improve, so will the growth of your desired grasses and legumes and will out compete the broomsedge. Stay with your lime and fertility program. | |
