NW Wisconsin
Depending on how much moisture and the consistancy of rainfall is. I never reccomend a grass hay. Faucet shuts off and so does your yield. Alfalfa will continue grow without rain for weeks. I grow alfalfa with orchard grass. Tames it down for beef cows but still is highly nutritious. First thing when ground is run down is P and K most hay jockies will just throw on the N and pretend like P and K and pH dont exist. Dont be suprised if you gotta throw on 1000 lbs to the acre of P and K to get it where it should be. Focus on grasses that perform well in your area. For me thats orchard grass with such a long spring we have around here makes for a giant first cutting. If you recieve rain during the summer every week or so a warm season grass might not be too bad of an option either. Also I would never graze a hay field... Leave that to a row crop field then you can work in the manure and feed them in it over winter and not have to worry about tracks you cant get out of the ground.
