E. Kansas
No doubt Mr. Whitney and others on air at the time persuaded many in their audience to take cover that time in April 1974. Those guys are certainly to be remembered and commended.

Bill Kurtis, longtime CBS television network personality, is noted for his live on-air warning on June 8, 1966 in the midst of an F5 tornado as it was going through Topeka, KS, when he pleaded with viewers "for God's sake, take cover". He was a young employee at WIBW TV and going to law school at Washburn University. A lot of video of that horrific tornado was captured, and complied into a 30 minute program that was shown on the June 8th anniversary of the storm for a number of years. That storm dispelled old legends of how Topeka was supposedly safe from tornadoes.

The 30 minute program is below, with Bill Kurtis' at about 10:30 into the video. This is 1960's black/white video, so it's not the quality like what you'd probably see if taken today.

WIBW TV had highlights years later about Bill Kurtis' 1966 tornado coverage and how it impacted his life. Many people remember and credit him for his dire plea that evening to take cover, which saved injuries and lives.

Never under-estimate what a tornado can do.
