I had horses as a kid growing up. l my dad hated horses because he had to farm with them, but he got them for me.  I rode on trail rides and in Iowa that's not very exciting.  In California I got to ride in the Hansen dam rec area.  Part of the fun was riding on a very spirited good looking horse and because there was a public stable there people always asked about him.
