scmn | Do you have any idea how difficult it us to thread the cervix on a bred heifer? Its about impossible to do, and if you do she will likely loose the pregnancy. Had AI tech tell me a couple times after I setup a "open heifer" for timed AI that she was bred and thats why I could not get thru. I guess that is why pregnancy is the #1 reason a cow does not come into heat.
With that said would you trust the vet that breeds 100hd per year or the tech that breeds 10,000hd per year to breed your herd? I know which one is faster, cheaper, and has the higher conception rate. I will bet these guys are faster, cheaper, and more accurate than 95% of vets. It is far easier to become proficient when that is all you do vs being a jack of all trades and species. The large dairies will tell you the techs get more pg calls correct than the vets do; nothing wrong with a little competition. | |
