NESD | I had a similar issue with an old SMTA. Ring gear was all burred up from years of starter engaging. The old starter drive was apparently worn enough that it would disengage. Put a new starter on and the new starter actually blew up and cracked the housing. Took it back and they wouldn’t warrant it. The old repair man told me to check the teeth on the flywheel. Sure enough they were burred up so I reached through the starter hold with a dremel grinder and cleaned them up. The 2nd new starter is worked fine for 10 years now. | |
