Jersey Shore, PA | The first root pits we ever dug on our farm. The first group corn then the second soybeans in 30"rows.
Corn pit: depth=34", compaction layers at 7" and 12". You may be able to see the popsicle sticks. I found this hard to determine exactly, but after several attempts I think I found the correct hard spots. You can see the corn roots with some reaching approx 25-28". The avg kernals per ear was around 380 for an estimated yield of 136 at 32K pop. Very unscientific on the estimate!
Soy pit: Depth=32" Deepest roots around 20" compaction layers at 4" and 12". Pod counts avg: 19
most have 3 beans per, some with 4, a few with 2.
Observations: I found it difficult to "clean" the dirt off well enough to really see the root growth without damaging roots. Any hints from experienced root pitters? Good moisture throughout which isnt surprising since we've had all of our summer rains in the last 2 weeks. The beans seemed to have good nodulation, found some clear at the bottom of the pit.
I think I'll be taking the ripper out some more as time permits this fall to get rid of some of those layers.
