Yes there were plenty of earthworms there. I'm figuring that they helped get those roots through the compaction layers. Found some of those guys deep pretty deep in the pit. They really do make a difference!

Nice deep roots there. Hope that equates to good yields this fall. What kind(s) of foliar do you use? I tried some foliar this summer on corn and soy, but not as much as I would have liked due to the drought.
Good luck with the new combine. I'm putting together a weigh wagon this year so my yield maps are more accurate on our farm.
