Milo gaurds were never meant to pick up milo. They only keep the heads from dropping down in front of the sickle after being cut off. If most of your field is down I would take them off and just run the header on the ground.
A stripper head will not work. Not only tough on the stripper teeth, it will only get about 90% of the grain out of the head.
A row crop head will be your best bet. You'll have to go kind of slow but it will pick up most of it.
With low humidity, you should be safe in storing milo up to about 16% or so. Main thing is keep the fan running until you get the grain dried down to 14% if you plan on storing into spring.
