West Texas

I don't know about beans, but here cotton is routinely planted in standing rye of about 3ft.
Story has it one farmer who is a pilot (spraying service) told his hands to go replant his cotton as he could not see it from the air when flying over it.
Turns out the cotton was 2ft tall but was could not be seen due to the tall rye.  (not sure it's true but makes a good story)

min till-strip till

Is this what you are wanting to do? This covercrop (wheat) was planted solid, then killed prior to planting but after making strips. Seen here is a rolling cultivator to knock down any remaining rootballs and smooth up the seedbed.

This wheat was pretty short as it was planted late (Feb). Normally it's a little taller.

These strips are about 10" wide on 36" row spacing.
