Subject: Went out and did some trails

Dallas Center IA 515-720-2463
Went out and did some trails. But first I needed to charge batteries.

Main thing I was looking for is how close the aircraft has to be to the Home point, to just move over the home point and land.
Vs climbing to the pre-set R2H height.
Moving horizontally to over the home point.
And last desending to the ground and landing.

First gave it a try from a horizontal distance of 80m / 265’
The drone climbed to it’s set R2H elevation above ground level.

Moved closer, to 45 m / 150’ horizontal distance.
Same thing, the drone first climbed.

Then another test at 17 m / 55’
The drone moved over to the home point without climbing, then started to desend.

Second trial. First I just flew around and burned up some battery.
Moved the drone to about 500’ from me. And about 300’ height.
Let it hover and burn more battery.

Got Low Battery warning at about 30%

At 21% battery it went into R2H for the low battery. Climbed to 120 m / 400’
Then moved over the home point and started it’s decent.

I canceled the R2H landing right over the home point and about 15’ in the air.
Moved the drone about 20’ away from the home point and let it hover.

Did not take long. At 11% battery remaining it landed where it was.

From looking at a DJI Phantom 3 tutorial I now feel a R2H height is not preset. You have to set it. Not sure.

Tutorial is titled ‘Fail safe’

The horizontal distance that the drone will just R2H without first climbing to the set R2H height I cannot find a setting for.

Note all distances are rounded off. My app is set metric. I covert by taking Meters X 3.3 = Feet, then round off a bit.

Again I urge people to set their Return to home height above the ground at at least 200’. Give it plenty of room above any tree, power line, grain elevator, etc.

If you find yourself with the drone on the other side of a tall building, tree or something, and cannot see it.
The first thing you need to do is get the thing up in the air above stuff.
