Subject: Why our rural communities are shrinking.

Agent Orange: Friendly fire that keeps on burning.

I got recruited to do a bit of planting this spring. If there is one single thing that has shrunk the number of farmers, it's the advent of the air-seeder here in wheat country. My son bought a used seeder last spring but he didn't get it tuned up in time for planting the '23 crop. It's going now https://youtu.be/PRnDkeXR8i0
It seems to work well and is quite productive but to say it is complex is an understatement. The cab is filled with screens to monitor GPS, seeder cart, run blockage monitors, hydraulic flow, engine vitals, cart tank levels. The meter rolls on the cart are a mix of electric motors driving hydraulic torque multipliers. Blockage monitors are acoustic that are coupled to an I-pad via wi-fi.
If a guy wanted to revert back to the old ways of doing this stuff, he might as well find himself a pair of knitting needles and a rocking chair because he would be about useless on a modern and productive farm.
