An old farmer I knew once told me the downfall of rural America was the self propelled combine.
Prior to that invention neighboring farmers all worked together at harvest. So they tended to get along and rely on each other. After the self propelled combine came out the neighbors no longer needed each other.
Why our rural communities are shrinking.
