Central Alberta | I met lots of farmers in my nascent years as an agronomist, who proudly claimed never to have used any fertilizer. Some of them lectured me extensively on how bad fertilizers were for the soil. Some of them compared it to "antibiotics" only to be used when the crop was sick. Another one told me that fertilizers were a "harmone" which causes the crop to grow artificially big and that was a bad thing (somehow I guess). Another one said he tried all the different ones, and the only one worth a dang was 16-20-0-15. I'm sure he only got those results because his soils were short of sulfur.
But not one of those guys are still farming today. They have all either sold out or out rented their land. They sat around the coffee shops convincing each other they were right for years, but in the end their soils were so depleted they couldn't make a living off it. Diehards until the day they die; just like flat-earthers and moon landing deniers. | |
