The only way I see that working well is to have very active soil biology to the point of it being like native prairie around here. Don't know if you are counting manure as fertilizer but some good manure applications do go a long ways as well.

Corn here loves its nutrients and fertilizer is the easiest way to supply that need, I don't think you would have much of a yield if any if you totally skipped fertilizer in a normal operation here.

Native prairie had a lot of organic matter stored up, which released its nutrients as it broke down.
But they farmed it away until it was gone, and the dust bowl blew away what was left.
Basic soil science.
