North Central Illinois | Yeah, I know what you mean. I am kind of torn about getting rid of the waterbed for the reasons you mention. I think it is really comfortable and warm. Chiropractor says it is probably the worst thing I could be sleeping on with my back condition. I have to admit that when my back is acting up I cannot lay on the waterbed. I don't know if it is lack of support or what but it don't work. We've always had the free flow mattress and really liked it but if there is something better out there that will help my back I'm willing to try it. One thing we are considering is a setup that Sleep Number has that is a unit that you can drop right in the structure for your waterbed. This way you don't have to get a new frame and headboard. If it didn't work out it would simply be a matter of removing the mattress and going back to a water mattress. There may be other companies that offer drop in units too but so far this is the only on we have come across. We are kind of leaning that way for now.
