That's alot of the reason we went to running an inline ripper with "no-till" points (DMI's official name for them) followed by our Phillips harrow in the spring. That combo has done a great job of getting rid of the compaction but without destroying the soil structure or residue cover and at the same time the harrow mixes just enough dirt in with the residue that we aren't seeing a thick mat or residue building up on the surface.
