Sac & Story county IA
That ad is probably legitimate. If you get 10,000 tons of load rolling, it is way more efficent than highway trucks. The tracks are never more than 2% grade. The problem with grain hauling is, it is not a high value load. The container from Long Beach to Chicago of retail items, the UP can have it there faster than a truck. Of course they get paid more for that train than grain. So the grain cars will sit. Or pull over and wait for the high value unit to have clear track. It has made a world of difference now that you can check on the position of the car from the satellite. And the temperature of the refrigeration in the car. Of course grain cars don't have satellite capabilities. My prediction is that this country will have way less truckload, national carriers in the future.
