Oskaloosa, Iowa 52577

We started using winter rye sowed in fall several years ago, and also put on a lot of turkey litter, which had/has a significant portion of "filler" (sawdust, whatever the confinements use at the time) in it, and then incorporate that right away.

Also paraplowed for two years during period beginning about 4 years ago.

Has made just a huge difference in 3 years.

I think in order of sequence.........I would paraplow, then do the deep-rooted cover crops......rye seems to work really well......not real expensive, and has a tremendous root system, plus a lot of fiber to till under................and then the commodity crop roots will get just a little bigger, ......etc............ you will get a geometric effect.

I think we are going to try the peas this fall, in addition to rye elsewhere.
