Have very tough, high clay soils that compact easily. Have done the ripping thing but that doesn't seem to help. Zone building in the fall is a bottomless mess if it gets very wet in the spring. It's hard to get a time when it's dry enough to till in the spring and then it gets dry and very hard in the summer. In the fall , it can be dry and as hard as concrete or wet and soft.
