Greg Sauder of Precision Planting has similar concerns with the field cultivator compaction layer. His primary tillage is deep ripping. Secondary tillage is with his To the Max Harrow. It tills at depths above what you would plant. I think about an inch deep. He plants under any layer created by the harrow and then there is nothing stopping the roots from taveling in thier natural direction. We did similar this year on a large share of our acres but used a Pheonix harrow instead of the To the Max.
