I would say that it is not so much whether you plow or rip. I think the key is to size(chop) and get the ground black. If you chop the stalks they won't cause as many problems in the spring and probably break down quicker. With a ripper you can get the ground very black if the stalks are chopped.

For root balls either a row cleaner on the planter or a crumbler on your tillage in the spring will help that problem.

My problem is that there is no way I could get everything plowed.

Getting the trash covered up is the major problem, not whether you use a plow, ripper, disc or chisel plow.

Just some of my observations.
