I have seen very similar patterns in this area (Wisconsin) over the years, especially when going thru a hot spell during silage harvest. Many times the culprit is anthracnose prematurely maturing the plants. The disease may be the explaination for the ear size differences as well. The infection occurs well before pollination. This disease doesn't hammer yields but tends to take off the top end. One feature of the disease is the plants will turn almost overnight, looking like a frost.
