Subject: Are soybeans the right bio-diesel crop?

Gary,

I have started to question whether soybeans are the right crop for moving forward with bio-diesel. It really looks like there will soon be a "protien glut" in this country, and yet we are promoting a 35% protien/19% oil crop for biodiesel.

I don't have any hard facts, but from what I can gather sunflowers or canola both have 40% or so oil content, double soybean levels. Wouldn't it make more sense to promote these crops as bio-diesel alternatives? And with the wide range of climates in this country, surely we could get substantial acres of both crops, and maybe leave soybeans for the corn belt states? Removing huge amounts of acres on the edges would still dramatically impact the soybean market.

Also, saw a news article yesturday that some in USDA are questioning the need for the current ethanol subsidy.  I did a write-up on this issue over on my blog this morning before I saw this thread.  Blog link:  http://darinsnotes.spaces.live.com/
