Wyoming | For "test" hay here, the dairymen want to see CP levels above 20%. Many times, you'll see a first cutting (taken in the first week of June, when the likelihood of frost, based on historical records, drops to only 10%), will have the low ADF, giving the required high TDN (56 or higher), but the CP will miss -- it will be down in the 19% range, even with big leaves on the plant. Give it a whiff of liquid N applied through the pivot and wha-la, 21 to 22% CP, no problemo. I'm going to register for Reno this week. We're in the middle of third cutting right now. Tonight, I might actually get enough dew to put some leaves in the bales, because a storm front is due in tomorrow. It isn't even 2100hrs yet and our relative humidity is up to 30%. Whoo-hoo, it looks like I might be able to start baling at midnight instead of 0400. |
