Easy answer, cereal rye, which will provide excellent winter hardiness for your area and likely grow decent even in lesser soil even if fertility levels aren't good. Broadcast seed in mid August, drag in after seeding. It's an annual, so would need to do this every year, but thinking in your situation, trying to establish a perennial plot would also have it's own set of problems.
Good points.
All my plots are close. I can check on them after work sometimes and get a little bit done, mowing or spraying. I love cereal rye for the price and area it covers. I also learned (by accident) that it will smother some of the worst weeds.
One of my long time friends has property 4 hours away so he plants his plots and comes back 5-6 months later and complains endlessly about how crappy they look.
But it does work a little bit because you won’t find another wildlife plot for miles and there is no crop land because it’s in the steep mountains. |
