Subject: Re: Advice on buying a JD 4440

N/E Iowa
We had one since it was new in 1980, long rear axles, power shift, heavy duty front axle, front fuel tank, 8 weights in the front, 20.8 38's in the rear, pretty much loaded. Can't quite remember how much he paid for it new, want to say around $28,000. Don't quote me, we sold it last spring, never touched the engine, (8,200 hrs) and never been painted, waxed twice a year, and power washed every spring and fall, We had it serviced every 3 years at the local J.D. shop. We sold it to a guy up the road 5 miles and got $23,250.00 out of it, threw in a pair of clamp on duals.

We NEVER had any trouble with the 8 speed power shift, yes a"tad" jumpy in a gear or two, but we also have a 1994,7800 power shift that is a rubber helmet shifting tractor in three different packs of gears!!

We never laid a wrench on that tractor other than the general up keep. We pulled a 12 row 1760 planter, 12 row cultivator, 7 -16 john deere plow, 24 foot disk (235), We once pulled a 24 foot finisher 3 inches deep in dark dirt, that there made her smoke some, it had 187 horse on the dyno, (2003). Had plenty of @ss, just not enough traction at times.. Overall good solid tractor.
