GV, I've bought two 4640's and a 4440 in the last ten years. They are all quad range. In my area most 8 speed power-shifts were disliked and didn't hold up. I'd never heard of the axle bearing problem being such an epidemic except on this forum. I like buying them with 5,000 or less hrs. They should have a lot of life left if they were taken care of. The 1981 and 82 models seem to be more in demand. I'm unsure of all the changes. IMHO they were some of the best that were made in the late 70's early 80's. Many out there with 10-20k on them. I think the 50 and 55 series had improvements, but they also cost more too. As far as power it's all how the governors and fuel settings are adjusted. Good Luck! Craig
