Subject: RE: Nebraska Irrigation NRD question

Panhandle of Ne.
We’re in the South Platte NRD and have a 3 year allocation of 39” which isn’t nearly enough here in the high desert. Last year was extremely dry and on a lot of our pivots we used around 17” , we started early and ran later in the season than normal. Most all the wells around here have a minimum of 200’ of water under the pump. Most of these wells were drilled in the early seventies and the pumps were set in 20’ to 30’ off water and none of them have ever been lowered. One estimate I did using amount of drop in fifty years and the water available in the hole, we have around 1000 years of water left. They don’t allow us enough water on dry years but we still have to pay taxes on fully irrigated land, apparently that seems fair to the board somehow.

This year is starting off looking like we won’t have to irrigate as much since we’ve had 10” plus of rain the past 3 weeks which is highly unusual here.
