They are doing it to build subsoil moisture. Because on corn if we don't have subsoil once we hit tassel we will never keep up and have crappy corn.
I agree that we need to build subsoil now. But, at least in my area, we don't have a lot of experience with this. In normal years, we pump when there's pretty good humidity in the air, and we don't have to worry too much about evaporation losses.
But this year the water is evaporating pretty fast. I made one pivot pass at 0.60", and the next day you couldn't tell it with the probe.
So I made a pass at 1", and that got some moisture down, and this last pass on that pivot I ran at 1.5". Normally, that would run off. There was no runoff, and it soaked down pretty good.
I'm going to be running pivots a lot slower than usual this year. |
