71 seems really young to be in that condition.

Do you have any wide-open field work you can set him to instead? It's a little harder to kill one's self when raking or disking a level field. Does he have any skill with a skid-loader? The extra precision of that might be easier for him when loading round bales.

Buy a big old zero-turn mower, put more aggressive tires on it, and use it for pasture mowing after the cows have vacated each paddock. That would be a simple daily chore you could assign him to.
