Yes, a big problem with studies is their short time span. And ruling out other contributing factors. And applying a short term finding to a person's lifetime. And experimenting on people. And finding funding to do it.
In this example of keto diet and kidney disease, did the participant's kidney function improve because of the keto diet? Or because they were on the keto diet and they lost wt and the wt loss is what improved it? Would it have improved on another type of wt loss diet too? Or they were on the keto diet and consumed less sugar and carbs and improved their metabolic health and that improved their kidney function? Etc. Hard to know and hard to measure any of that on a long term basis with so many variables.
We do seem to know that attaining/maintaining a healthy weight, avoiding metabolic syndrome, exercising, keeping your brain active and getting good sleep are keys to long term health. And good genes help a lot too.
