Had a customer in my office today talking about drones and how great they are. Apprently there’s a company that makes one that never leaves the field and can do all field operations except harvest which would require another robot drone thing.

Am I the only young guy scared by this?

I’ll admit I’m a hold out and don’t care for fancy attachments or guidance etc but understand for others they have their place. But if these robot drone things take off as fast as they seem to already will a “farmer” be necessary in 10 years?

How will the eco mandates affect us? Not allowed to run equipment older than 2015 with the latest emissions?

Just seems very scary when you think about it.

10 years ago most guys scoffed at autosteer and claimed they were always going to steer the wheel, now I'm not sure you could find more than a handful of fields in a county that haven't been planted with autosteer. Everyone adapts fast. The technology will continue to consolidate farms and structure them to run with employees instead of owner/operators. I guess maybe we are a lot like the trucking industry. There used to be a lot of owner/operators, now they are all running corporate trucks with elogs and cameras on them the whole time the truck is in motion and they are on the way to being autonomous. Our society works really hard at eliminating variability in operations and the best way to do that is eliminate the human decision making process in operations.
