Sidedressing N is like cultivating, and I hate cultivating. You cover up corn especially on rolling topography.
Equipment usually needs fixing, I usually am the first out with a bar so hoses break ,corn gets GASED, I get GASED, I hate the stuff. Our heavy clay soils never seal very well either, futher compounding the smell in the cab.
The bigger bars I pull in the fall are newer and in better shape. I don't run over corn, I can cover more acres and the bar is alot futher away from the cab letting in less of the nasty stuff :)
As for last resort, I rented a farm in april this year and it stayed wet and planting got delayed so I did not preplant N, figured planting date was more important than getting N on. So I decided to sidedress instead. Now i know why i went fall applied many years ago!
With my job as a seed rep I have more time in early november than i do in June, so i always try to fall apply. Its normally cheaper than also. I wish I had enough manure to do ALL my acres.
