Pele Pedersen at Iowa State is pushing for lower populations, maybe as low as 90,000 for 30" rows and for earlier planting. He claims significant increase in yields from planting beans as early as corn, at least back to mid April in Iowa. He does admit that frosted beans drastically reduce production but there's plenty of time to replant and it doesn't frost in early May every year... Just on the average.

Do I believe him? Yah sure. I planted 150K in 30" rows with Kinze bean meters in a JD 7000 with Dawn trash wheels on Memorial Day. They look fine for being so young today.
