West Chazy, New York | In theory a 90% calf crop with 50% heifers would be 45% in a year to be bred and if the heifers settle 90% that's about 40% less the 10% cull of the cow herd. Everything goes exactly right and it could be possible to increase by about a third. In reality, about 10% would be achievable assuming plentiful feed and a cull rate sufficient to maintain the desired genetics. The big driver is the price for cull cows and the age (and motivation) of the operator. Oh yes, weather sometimes has a little impact as well. | |
