Mid MO
It's my understanding that the volatility is caused by newbies coming in at high prices and dumping when things turn. As our area gets cut into 20 ac peices, some folks will try to run cattle because it's so easy and granddaddy did it. When they loose money, the trades see a decline in work, or momma puts her foot down, the cows get dumped.

Last time, I rolled into a special cow sale and noticed all the tradesmens' big fancy coxk wagons lined up in the parking lot. They were there to buy. That was my signal to cut back and be cautious. I was glad to be selling that night.

Im guilty of keeping cows for one more calf. I've got a couple cows that have seen 2 draughts. Once as yearlings and then last year. Still doing a good job and refuse to give me a heifer calf. They will be on a truck as soon as the calves are weaned this time.
