Corn yields can be maintained with a lot less applied N if the N is applied when and where the corn plant needs it. And this is especially true on soils such as in S NE.

I couldn't agree with you more about current government subsidy programs actually encouraging excess fertilization  - and nitrate pollution of ground waters.

As a cattleman I would love to see more encouragement for grassland and pasture.

Even in my hilly area of SW WI there is no way cattle, grass and pasture can compete economically with government subsidized and insured wall to wall corn even on our erodible slopes.
