Some people need their teeth cleaned every 3 months. Some people can go longer.
The 6 month interval is the standard of care because that's the length of time for the "average patient" to need cleaning and 6 months is enough time for a cavity to form.

Just because some of the responses said that they haven't been to the dentist since 1980-something doesn't mean that they healthy teeth or a healthy mouth. If the engine oil hasn't been changed in your tractor for 3000 hours....does that mean your machine is in great perfect condition?

Calculus (tarter) buildup is a major contributing factor for periodontal disease (aka gum disease). Periodontal disease is mostly asymptomatic until there is a big problem that can't be fixed. Perio patients can have non-decayed teeth, but no bone left to hold them in. Regular cleaning removes the calculus.

There is no at home gadget that you can buy on Amazon or at home routine that can do the same as a quality cleaning with a hygienist. I've tried to clean my own teeth. It does not work well....can't get the instruments at the right angle to do an effective job (and that's with 6 years of dental training and the proper dental instruments).
