Forget about about how it looks! As long as it sticks and don't break again! If you want it to look good get a Lincoln brand 5PP+ rod. Your welds will probably look good then.
I use to think we needed different rods for different things.
Basicly a 6011 will weld just about anything steel. A cheap 7018 rod will not weld very good! Lincoln brand does.

A 6011 rod is the most used rod out there and is great for farm use, very forgiving when it comes to rust and paint. It will just burn thru it where most of your other rods will need more prep.

Go to your local library and see what they have for reading material on welding.

Forget about a wire welder for now. Yes they are nice but not a must. We've gotten by for years without one until about 2 months ago. We had a large project with about 100hrs worth of welding so we finally got a wire welder to help speed things up. I still use the stick most of the time.
